What’s Your Favourite Aussie Dish?

Introduction

Australia is known as the land of plenty, and its food reflects that reputation. From fresh seafood to meat pies, there are dozens of Australian dishes to try during your trip. In fact, it can be hard to narrow down just one favourite dish. However, you don’t have to choose just one! Here’s everything you need to know about the best Australian recipes so that you can try some while visiting Down Under:

Vegemite on toast

Vegemite is a yeast extract spread that’s been a staple in Australian homes since 1923. It’s made from brewer’s yeast, salt and spices, and it contains B vitamins as well as protein–and it can be spread on toast or sandwiches!

Vegemite has been around for so long because it tastes good and is easy to make at home–but if you don’t have time to brew your own batch (or if you just don’t want to), there are plenty of other ways to enjoy this salty goodness. You can even buy jars of pre-made Vegemite online or at specialty stores like Australia Post!

Chicken parmigiana

Chicken parmigiana is a popular dish in Australia. It’s made with chicken, ham, cheese, tomato sauce and herbs. Chicken parmigiana can be served as a meal or as an appetizer. It’s often served with chips or salad on the side.

Lamb roast with mint sauce

  • Lamb is a meat from sheep.
  • It’s best to cook it slowly in an oven or on a barbecue, so that it doesn’t dry out.
  • You can make mint sauce by combining equal parts of chopped fresh mint leaves, white vinegar and sugar in a bowl; then stir until combined. You can also add some olive oil if you want it to be more like a salad dressing than a sauce (this is what we do).
  • Serve the lamb roast with mint sauce either alongside or on top of the meat itself!

Fish and chips

Fish and chips is a dish that originated in England. It consists of fried fish, served with chips (also known as fries).

To make this dish at home:

  • Choose a thick white fish such as cod or whiting for your batter. The type of batter you use depends on what kind of fish you choose; if it’s oily, then you should use something light like beer batter; if it’s not very oily then flour alone will do the trick.
  • Cut up your potatoes into wedges before frying them until golden brown in hot oil or lard until they’re crispy on both sides – but don’t let them burn! Drain them on paper towels then serve immediately while still hot with lemon wedges and tartare sauce (mayonnaise mixed with finely chopped pickles).

Pavlova (or pav)

Pavlova is a meringue dessert topped with whipped cream and fruit. It was invented in honour of ballerina Anna Pavlova, who visited Australia in 1926. This dish became popular at Christmas and Easter, but now you can find it all year round!

Pavlova is often served with passionfruit or kiwifruit on top because they go so well together!

Aussie burger with beetroot, pineapple and fried egg

Aussie burger with beetroot, pineapple and fried egg

This is one of my favourite Aussie dishes. It’s simple but so delicious! You can make this at home in minutes and it’s definitely worth trying out if you’re feeling adventurous. This recipe makes 2 burgers but feel free to double or triple it if you have more people coming over for dinner!

Anzac biscuit (or Anzacs)

Anzac biscuits are a popular Australian biscuit, made from rolled oats, sugar, coconut and golden syrup. They were first made in Australia during World War I by a woman named Annie Cook, who combined ingredients that she had on hand to produce something tasty and easy to transport for soldiers going off to war.

Anzac Day is April 25th each year and marks the anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli during World War I when Australian and New Zealand Army Corps troops fought against Turkey as part of an Allied campaign against Turkey (and Germany).
